The symbols are required to be installed on all applicable buildings within ninety (90) days of the effective date of this code or by March 20, 2010.

The symbols must be installed within 24 inches of the left side of the main entrance to the facility. It must be located between 4 feet and 6 feet above grade, walking surface, or finished floor. Depending on the number of main entrances and their locations, additional symbols may be required.

Where the owner of the structure and the authority having jurisdiction, Polk County Fire Rescue, disagree as to the use of light-frame truss-type construction within the structure, the owner shall be granted no more than 45 days to provide written verification from a licensed engineer or licensed architect; otherwise, the owner shall comply with the rule.

Minimize
In the upcoming weeks and months you may notice on buildings of light weight truss and floor design a sign indicating such. The signs are a red reflective Maltese Cross with white lettering on a white back ground. The lettering that will be in the center of the Maltese Cross and will be an (F), indicating a light weight floor design, a (R) indicating a light weight truss or both letters (R) and (F) indicating both a light weight floor and roof truss design. The signs are to be located to the left of the main entrance door/s, no lower then 4 feet and no higher then 6 feet and no further then 24 inches from the door.
The purpose of the signs is to give firefighters an extra tool in identifying a light weight hazard on the approach to a structure. As you all well know roof and floor collapse has claimed a firefighter’s life on more than one occasion. Our fire plans reviewer will be catching light weight construction at the review level for new construction. It will be part of the inspection process by our fire inspectors prior to passing a final inspection for occupancy and we will be approaching existing locations on an on going basis.
Below is what the signs will look like. The Maltese Cross is 8 inches by 8 inches.
